The Parking and Transportation office will provide shuttle service to Logan Airport for the Spring Break. Shuttles will be available on Thursday, March 22 through Saturday, March 24 at scheduled departure times.
Advanced reservations are required. Please visit the Parking and Transportation reservations page to reserve a seat at a cost of $15.00. All reservations will be processed via the website and the shuttle fee will be billed to the student account or via employee payroll deduction.
Shuttles will depart from the Kresge parking lot at the scheduled times. Please make sure you arrive on time as the shuttles need to maintain the posted scheduled departures. While the average trip to Logan Airport is about a half-hour, you should allow an hour as traffic, construction, and airport security delays are expected. (Kresge parking lot location:

Ruth Gotian, EdD, MS, Administrative Director, Weill Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan Kettering, Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program
Dr. Ruth Gotian is an accomplished, versatile Senior Educational Administrator with a stellar career history of achievement driving organizational success on behalf of high profile academic institutions. Her career is comprised of a lengthy tenure with Weill Cornell Medical College’s MD-PhD Program, in addition to other academic institutions. 
Dr. Gotian completed her doctorate at Columbia University’s Teachers College where she studied Adult Learning and Leadership. Her doctoral dissertation Optimizing Success of Physician-Scientists, studied the most successful physician-scientists of our generation in order to determine what drove them to success. She received her B.S. and M.S. in Business Management from the University at Stony Brook in New York as well as certificates in Executive Leadership and Managing for Execution from Cornell University. 

Since joining the staff of the Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program in 1996, Dr. Gotian has seen the size of the program increase by over 67%, the number of applications to their MD-PhD Program has increased by 105% and the number of underrepresented minority students in their program has tripled and is now one of the highest in the country.  Dr.  Gotian also oversees the unique summer program for pre-MD-PhD students, Gateways to the Laboratory Program. She is very active on the national MD-PhD Program scene, having served on the National MD-PhD Steering Committee of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and is on the National MD-PhD Communications Committee.   Dr. Gotian is always looking for innovative ways to improve mentoring and efficiency and has given numerous workshops on adult development, learning sytles, microaggressions, mentorship, program development and leadership and is published for her work in these fields. In 2014, she conceptualized and implemented a blended learning curriculum with a virtual mentoring community for the Gateways to the Laboratory Program—the first of its kind nationwide for a STEM summer program.

NEW ELECTIVE TOPIC - Drug Discovery and Development 
Through short lectures and interactive team exercises, students will explore the key phases of drug discovery and development starting from identifying unmet medical needs and therapeutic targets through to health authority approval. Additionally, students will investigate the different disciplines that participate in the discovery and development of drugs and devices.

Session will be taught by scientists from the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research.

Dinner will be served at 6:15 with the opportunity to network with the guest speakers.

"Healthcare Ethics and Human Rights in Emergencies: From Katrina to Maria and Beyond"

Sheri Fink is the author of the New York Times bestselling book, Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital (Crown, 2013) about choices made in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. She is a correspondent at the New York Times, where her and her colleagues' stories on the West Africa Ebola crisis were recognized with the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for international reporting, the George Polk Award for health reporting, and the Overseas Press Club Hal Boyle Award. Her story "The Deadly Choices at Memorial," co-published by ProPublica and the New York Times Magazine, received a 2010 Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting and a National Magazine Award for reporting. A former relief worker in disaster and conflict zones, Fink received her M.D. and Ph.D. from Stanford University.

Call for Participation
MIT and IBM Research are co-hosting the 2nd NorthEast Computational Health Summit (NECHS) focused on the latest developments and applications of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare. The goal of the summit is to foster communication and collaboration among clinicians, medical informaticists, and computational researchers in the northeast.
The summit will feature invited keynotes as well as submitted papers and posters on various aspects of computational health including deep learning, observational studies, predictive modelling, translational informatics, patient engagement, health behavior and digital health. The summit will conclude with an interactive panel following by a networking session.

We invite submissions of abstracts describing all aspects of research relating to design and implementation of AI solutions in healthcare. This encompasses relevant tasks in data mining, data analytics, data science, natural language processing and machine learning as well as explanatory models. The primary emphasis is on advances in the science and application of AI in healthcare.
Submitted abstracts will go through a peer review process and will be selected for either podium or poster presentations by the review committee.  Some poster presentations will also be selected for a short oral spotlight presentation prior to the poster session.

Submissions are limited to a total of 1 page, including all content and references.

For each accepted paper or poster, at least one author must attend the conference and present the paper/poster.
There will be no official publication of papers, however, podium presentations will be video-taped and presenters will be asked to sign a release form to allow the videos to be made available on the conference web site.
While we are seeking to showcase new work, our summit does allow submission of papers that are under review or have been recently published in a conference or a journal.

Boston has long been known as a medical mecca of scientific discovery. Boston’s healthcare professionals and administrators are adopting practices from other high-risk and service industries. The ‘big data’ movement is thriving, fundamentally changing our healthcare delivery systems. Digital health investments are higher than ever before. Medical hackathons and un-conferences are now an every-weekend occurrence. And both redesign and innovation promise to change medicine as we know it. It’s all happening right here, right now. But the problem is that many of us don’t know it. Despite Boston’s innovative energy and a solid medical infrastructure, many medical providers and health care entrepreneurs remain in the dark about the opportunities, events and work happening in and around the city of Boston – and across the country. That’s where we come in.
At Medtech Boston, we highlight exciting medical innovation work in and around the city of Boston. We aim to start a discussion about the most exciting and controversial new healthcare offerings, igniting a new reputation for Boston as a city with first-class medical research and patient care, but also as a city full of passionate people who use new technology to think big thoughts about medicine’s most pressing problems.

The goal of the Global Health and Medical Humanities Initiative (GHMHI) is to provide MIT students the training to analyze critically the determinants of health and roles of medicine in society from historical and cross-cultural perspectives.

Global Health programs in medical schools, schools of public health, and universities and colleges across the U.S. emphasize how biomedical training, research, and practice, as well as interdisciplinary collaborations beyond the health sciences, are necessary to improve the determinants of health—whether social, political, economic, or biological.
Medical Humanities is a subfield of medicine that draws on the humanities, arts, and social sciences to analyze medical education and clinical practice.

For PhD students conducting research in the field of bioengineering, this is a reminder to submit your application for a cash prize of $2,500.
Who can apply?
  1. MIT/Harvard PhD students, registered for at least one semester during the 2017-2018 academic year, and whose bioengineering research was performed in either RLE or EPL/MEEI.
  2. As the Peake Prize honors outstanding student research, students must have made a major research contribution published or submitted as a peer-reviewed article or a proceeding in a major international journal or conference.
  3. Research does not necessarily need to have explicit biological component but can constitute a major technological breakthrough delivering new capabilities in bioengineering. Basic science discoveries relevant to bioengineering are also welcome.

The MindHandHeart Innovation Fund seeks to leverage the enthusiasm and problem-solving skills of the MIT community to find new and inventive ways of increasing awareness about mental health, building communities of support, and promoting life skills— all of which have been shown by the Jed Campus Program to enhance student wellbeing and reduce risk on college campuses. The Fund offers grants of up to $10,000 to invest in cutting-edge ideas and grassroots solutions developed right here by our faculty, students, and staff.

If you are interested in pursuing local professional development opportunities outside your area of study or research, you are welcome to apply for the Professional Development Exploration Grant (PDE) Grant, offered by the Academics, Research, and Career Committee of the MIT Graduate Student Council. The PDE Grant is allocated to cover registration fees that are not currently funded by the student’s advisor or other funding sources. Registration would be covered, up to the $200 cap, for professional development activities including but not limited to seminars, workshops, conferences, and meetings.
The next deadline is March 9th. Results will be announced by March 16th. Please note that the grant only covers events between April 1, 2018 to June 30, 2018.

Interested in widening college access and using your expertise, to make a real difference in the lives of young people?
The Innovation League is looking for passionate graduate students to help deliver our mission to close the college access and attainment gap in Massachusetts. Graduate students receive training and support from qualified teachers, to design and deliver 6 week unique after school academic enrichment programs, based on their own specific area of research. 
Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (CRLS) is piloting the program this March, with a select group of students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds in grades 9 -11. Graduate students need to be able to commit to attending one hour per week at CRLS for 6 weeks and a half-day visit to campus. If you are interested in the opportunity to gain hands-on teaching experience and make a real impact in the lives of young people, contact to learn more.

A new program has started that is designed to help students who may be in need of support and direction, but who are reluctant to visit MIT Medical, or engage with S^3 or ODGE.  
Called “Let’s Chat,” this outreach, which was originally announced by Cindy Barnhart in her recent message about various student support initiatives, offers a drop-in counseling office two hours daily from Tuesday through Thursday each week, in 8-316. Students who want a low-energy-barrier way to talk to someone can sign up for one of several 20-minute sessions available from 1-3 pm Tuesdays through Fridays. The goal is to make it as easy as possible for students to reach out for help they might need, so no advance appointment is necessary; students sign up for a 20-minute time slot by simply marking an “X” on one of the designated times on the daily schedule, which will be posted outside the door to 8-316.  
This service will be staffed by clinicians from Mental Health, and is open to ALL students — graduate, undergraduate, any department. Urgent situations should continue to be routed to MH walk-in or urgent care; “Let’s Chat” will focus on listening to students taking the first step to request support, and on providing referrals when necessary.

The Stanford Molecular Imaging Scholars (SMIS) Program is currently recruiting postdoctoral fellows. 

The Stanford Molecular Imaging Scholars (SMIS) program is an integrated, three-year cross-disciplinary postdoctoral training program at Stanford University that brings together 33 faculty mentors from 14 departments in the Schools of Medicine, Engineering, and Humanities and Sciences. Molecular imaging, the non-invasive monitoring of specific molecular and biochemical processes in living organisms, continues to expand its applications in the detection and management of cancer. SMIS faculty mentors provide a diverse training environment spanning biology, physics, mathematics, biocomputation/biomedical informatics, engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, cancer biology, immunology, and medical sciences. The centerpiece of the SMIS program is the opportunity for trainees (PhD or MD with an emphasis on PhD) to conduct innovative molecular imaging research that is co-mentored by faculty in complementary disciplines. SMIS trainees also engage in specialized coursework, seminars, national conferences, clinical rounds, including ethics training and the responsible conduct of research. The three-year program culminates with the preparation and review of a mock NIH grant proposal, in support of trainee transition to an independent career in cancer molecular imaging.

2. Biomanufacturing Engineer
Position summary

This is a part time (20-30 hours) programmer/analyst position on completing epidemiology-based computer simulation models of diseases in human populations to support ongoing health policy research studies in precision and genomic medicine.  The person in this position would be responsible for programming in C++ or R, data management and assisting investigators with statistical analyses of clinical and economic data.

The Dystonia and Speech Motor Control Laboratory at Mass Eye and Ear and Mass General Hospital has several open postdoctoral fellow positions to study normal and diseased organization of large-scale networks controlling highly skilled motor behaviors. We employ multimodal neuroimaging methodologies, including task-production, resting-state and pharmacological fMRI, high-resolution structural MRI, diffusion weighted imaging, and direct intracranial EEG, to examine brain functional, effective and structural connectivity in healthy individuals and patients with neurological disorders - dystonia and epilepsy. Our analytic approaches include, but are not limited to, graph theoretical analysis of large-scale neural networks, the application of novel machine learning algorithms for diagnostic and predictive classification of neurological disorders, and neural population modeling. In addition, we are examining the interplay between imaging, behavioral and genetics factors that contribute to the pathophysiology of neurological disorders.
The postdoctoral fellow will function as part of a multidisciplinary team of neuroscientists, geneticists, neurologists and laryngologists at Mass Eye and Ear and Mass General Hospital and in collaboration with neurosurgeons at UMass Memorial Medical Center. Responsibilities will include the conduct of all aspects of the research protocol, such as the development, modification and execution of data analysis, preparation of publications and scientific presentations, dissemination of the results through peerreviewed scientific journals and at the major national and international meetings, and mentoring the junior staff. Excellent opportunities exist for various scientific interactions and collaborations with experts in the fields of neuroscience, movement disorders, and genetics as well as for participation in the extensive programs of seminars, symposia, and other relevant meetings within Harvard Medical School.
The postdoctoral fellow may work on one or more projects.
(I) Machine learning for identification and validation of neuroimaging and genetic markers of dystonia and the prediction of risk for dystonia development.
(II) Graph theoretical analysis, machine learning and pharmacogenomics for identification of primary mechanistic markers of action of a novel oral medication in patients with dystonia.
(III) Abnormalities of brain activation and neural networks across different forms of task-specific focal dystonia using a combination of structural and functional neuroimaging techniques, genetic analysis, and behavioral neurotesting.
(I) Graph theoretical analysis of high-resolution intracranial EEG data for identification of the topology of large-scale neural connectivity in epilepsy and the development of neural markers for prediction of epileptic seizures.
Normal speech production
(I) Development and implementation of large-scale neural population models incorporating neurotransmission for simulation and prediction of brain activity during speech production.
Qualifications and Skills
  • PhD in neuroscience, mathematics, computer science, bioengineering, or related fields
  • Exceptionally strong computational and biostatistical skills to implement and integrate the analysis of
    multi-dimensional imaging, clinical and/or genetic datasets
  • Solid experience in Python, MATLAB, and C
  • Strong experience in algorithmic design, mathematical models (primarily stochastic differential equation systems), and analysis and integration of dynamic systems
  • Independent, self-motivated with a proven track record of productive research
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in collaboration with multiple investigators
  • Strong publication record and excellent academic credentials

Full-time, 1-year initial contract, renewable annually contingent upon performance.

Duties And Responsibilities
The Principal Biomedical Engineer is responsible for contributing to the company’s technical vision, developing technology/product roadmaps, technical business development support, and providing leadership of the company‘s technology development in their areas of expertise. This position is responsible for developing creative solutions to significant unmet medical needs in the Vivonics focus area, developing government proposals to fund technology development and providing technical leadership to funded projects.  The Principal Biomedical Engineer plays an integral role in setting the company’s strategic direction, development and future growth.
The Principal Biomedical Engineer will also be responsible for leading teams developing hardware and software for a variety of applications, potentially including non-invasive physiological monitoring, bio-material development, physiological stimulation, medical related applications and algorithms, telemedicine, and others.  This position involves technical leadership, proposal development, and individual technical contributions including:
  • Work with the CEO and business development team to identify important unmet medical needs that address a significant potential market and can be addressed by technology in the Vivonics focus area.
  • Develop concepts for new technology solutions to challenging problems that are candidates for government funding to pursue development.
  • Create development approach for new technologies, including proof of concept and validation study design.
  • Author core technical sections of proposals for government funding and review/edit entire proposals.  It is expected that in the first year, >50% of the person’s time will be focused on winning new business.
  • Provide technical leadership to project teams to ensure that development efforts address the underlying user needs and technology gaps.
  • Communicate with sponsors, collaborators, potential customers and Vivonics management.
Basic Qualifications
  • An advanced degree in Biomedical Engineering, or related field, with at least 3 years (PhD) or 5+ years (Master’s) of experience leading R&D programs and winning research funding.
  • Working knowledge of human physiology and medical instrumentation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including experience in formulating and writing technical proposals.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to conceive and reduce to practice innovative medical technology product concepts.
  • Good planning and organizational skills as well as technical proficiency in some aspect of product design for software, electrical and/or mechanical systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop collaborator and customer relationships
