We offer a free class for EMT-B Certification every semester.

The application to join our class is due by Monday, March 18^th at 11:59 PM EST

Decisions will be released by April 30th. This semester, the class will be around 10 people. 

In order to be eligible for the class, you must:

1. be an MIT affiliate (undergrad or graduate student, staff, cross registered, or otherwise affiliated)
2. be at least 18 years of age by 09/01/2024
3. obtained a US driver's license on 09/23/2023 or earlier.

Please note that all three items are required for eligibility. Because our class size is so limited, priority will be given to applicants who are in the Boston area for at least one year following completion of the class. However, we encourage everyone to apply!

MIT SCIENCE POLICY REVIEW SESSION

MIT Science Policy Review will be joined by Kei Koizumi for a virtual Q&A session on Monday, March 11 at 5pm ET. 

Kei Koizumi currently serves as the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) Principal Deputy Director. Kei possesses an impressive career in the intersection of technology and policy — serving as OSTP’s Chief of Staff, working on technology policy reform on the Obama-Biden transition team in 2008-2009, and directing the R&D Budget and Policy Program at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Kei will join us virtually to discuss his career arc in technology policy, followed by a Q&A session. 

This event will be hosted over Zoom, however we will also be broadcasting this event in room 5-217. There will be food for those who attend the event in person (up to roughly 20 people).

CHIL 2024 DOCTORAL SYMPOSIUM CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

The AHLI CHIL (Conference on Health, Inference, and Learning) 2024 Doctoral Symposium is an opportunity for PhD students to broadcast their research and get feedback on their directions from CHIL attendees and leaders in the field. Participants will present their ongoing and/or future doctoral dissertation work as both a 5 minute lightning presentation and as a poster, encouraging discussion of ideas with senior leaders and CHIL participants. Our main CFP can give an indication of the areas that are covered in CHIL. In addition to the lightning talks and poster session, participants will have facilitated opportunities to connect with and meet established researchers one-on-one throughout the conference. The Doctoral Symposium will be held on June 28, 2024 in New York City, NY, United States. It is an in-person event.

Join us for MLK Scholar Angélica Mayolo Obregón’s presentation on “The Afro Inter-American Forum on Climate Change: Highlighting the Key Role of Afro Descendants for Biodiversity Conservation in the Americas.” The AIFCC has worked with Afro-descendant communities, researchers, and leaders to give greater visibility to the challenges these communities face. These challenges include significant environmental issues, strengthening of local capacities for the mitigation and adaptation of climate risks, and the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem degradation in the Americas. The AIFCC looks to become the foremost international network of researchers, policymakers, and local environmental leaders who influence important policies and decisions at the international, national, and regional levels.

Angélica María Mayolo Obregón is Former Minister of Culture of Colombia, where she also formerly served as Executive President of the Chamber of Commerce in Buenaventura. Obregón is currently a consultant for the MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative.

MLK Scholar Presentation: "From NYC Cabbie to Economist: A Journey Through Social Behavior and Identity" with Dr. Kwabena Donkor

In this talk, Dr. Kwabena Donkor shares his journey from steering a yellow cab through the bustling streets of New York City to navigating the complexities of social and economic behavior. Dr. Donkor will talk about how a taxi's rearview mirror gave him a unique vantage point to observe the interplay of social norms and identity—insights that fuel his research. Dr. Donkor will focus on the intricate web of social and economic interactions, from the tipping habits of NYC passengers to the loyalties of sports enthusiasts across continents and the resilience of US migrant farmworkers. But the ride doesn't stop there; Dr. Donkor will glimpse his upcoming projects to further our understanding of economic decisions in an ever-evolving world.

Dr. Kwabena Donkor is an Assistant Professor of Marketing at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a faculty fellow at the Stanford Institute of Economic Policy Research (SIEPR).

Trained in emergency medicine and medical informatics, Dr. Halamka has been developing and implementing healthcare information strategy and policy for more than 25 years.  Dr, Halamka will discuss the Mayo Clinic Platform, bringing together solution developers, data partners and healthcare service providers to transform healthcare.

Prior to his appointment at Mayo Clinic, he was chief information officer at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he served governments, academia and industry worldwide. As the International Healthcare Innovation Professor at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Halamka helped the George W. Bush administration, the Obama administration and governments around the world plan their healthcare information strategies.

Dr. Halamka has written 15 books and hundreds of articles. He was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2020. He and his wife run Unity Farm Sanctuary in Sherborn, Massachusetts, dedicated to the lifetime care of ill, disabled, senior, orphaned and surrendered farm animals.

INVITATION FOR GEM BIO WORKSHOP AT ICLR 2024

MAJUMDER LAB RECRUITING PHD STUDENTS

Fully-Funded Research Assistantships in Machine Learning, Pandemic Preparedness, & Socioepidemic Misinformation

The Majumder Lab at Harvard Medical School & Boston Children's Hospital is currently recruiting PhD students who hope to conduct thesis research at the intersection of machine learning, pandemic preparedness, and socioepidemic misinformation. All applicants will be considered for ongoing projects that apply machine learning to pandemic preparedness and/or socioepidemic misinformation. Successful applicants will also be welcome to propose their own projects under these broad application areas.

Our team specializes in the use of search query, mobile phone, and news+social media data within these application areas. Methods of interest include agent-based and phenomenological models of epidemics, natural language processing of misinformation, and causal inference for health policy evaluation. However, previous experience with these data types and methodological approaches is not required, especially if quantitative and programming skills are strong.

Key Qualifications and Required Skills:

• Programming proficiency in Python or R
• Strong communication skills
• Commitment to a fair and just work environment
• Current enrollment in a PhD program at Harvard Medical School (including HST)

Optional Skills:

• Prior experience conducting research on epidemics and/or misinformation
• Prior experience with Bayesian inference
• Prior experience with sentiment analysis, emotion analysis, and/or large language models

GSC BATTLE OF THE BANDS

On Saturday, March 9 at 5pm, the GSC is hosting its annual Battle of the Bands, and we want YOU to participate! On stage in Morss Hall (building 50), the bands will duke it out for the title of MIT’s Musical Maestros, as chosen by your fellow grad students. We’ll have the food and the venue, but we need YOU to sign up and show off those musical chops! 

Both groups and solo acts are welcome! If you have a band, a group of friends ready to get up on stage, or even just latent musical talent that’s ready to impress, we want to see it! Please sign up using this form so we can set up the showdown. If you have the skills but not the equipment, that’s ok! We’ll be renting equipment, and you can indicate in the form what you would need.

Bands must be at least 50% MIT graduate students. Also, you do not need to be a formal band or experienced performer to participate. We’ll have compensation for all performers as thanks for helping make a great event!

DRAPER SCHOLARS - APPLICATION SITE OPEN NOW

Draper is seeking creative, passionate, and  scientifically ambitious doctoral students to develop the next generation of microphysiological neural tissue models.  Organoids are a relatively recent exciting development in the MPS field capturing more interest in drug discovery because of their ability to mimic aspects of tissue complexity in terms of cell types and architecture.  However, the conventional use of organoids as  tissue models have a number of limitations including a lack of vasculature and perfusion which stunts growth and leads to necrosis, a lack of long range tissue coherence, and a lack of a facile method of longitudinally interrogating the organoid.  The next generation of neural models will address these limitations by combining advances in multiple fields including 3D printing techniques to spatially organize the tissue, multiplexed microfluidic interfaces to perfuse, interrogate and control the delivery of key nutrients and morphogens, multiplexed electrical interfaces to non-invasively monitor the synaptic brainwave activity, and directed iPSC differentiation to model specific regions of the brain. We are seeking students interested in developing the hardware and materials breakthroughs to combine these technologies in novel ways to enable more predictive and physiologically relevant neural models.

These are a great opportunity to practice presenting to a general audience and get a diverse set of feedback about your energy or climate-related work. Presenters will also have the opportunity to work with the MIT Communication Lab to fine-tune their presentation skills. Last semester, we had a diverse array of presentations including green hydrogen production, climate implications of computing, optimizing concrete structures, and federal climate policy.

GSC INSTITUTE AWARDS - NOMINATIONS OPEN

Every year the GSC gives out four Institute Awards, to be presented at the Institute Awards Convocation. The awards are:

• Frank E. Perkins Award for Excellence in Graduate Advising (for each school)
• Edward L. Horton Fellowship Award
• Irwin Sizer Award for Most Significant Improvement to MIT Education

Nomination of students and faculty for these awards offer a unique opportunity to honor these individuals for their invaluable contributions to graduate students and to thank them for their efforts. A complete nomination requires a supporting statement not to exceed one page or 500 words. Although there are no hard and fast guidelines, a strong nomination is likely to include a high-quality statement clearly describing relevant accomplishments, any specific task, and/or incidents reflecting the nominee’s dedication and genuine interest.

SALK FELLOW IN IMMUNOBIOLOGY AND MICROBIAL PATHOGENESIS

Salk Institute, La Jolla, CA

Description
The Salk Fellows Program is a path for innovative early-stage career scientists to embark on fully independent research programs as an alternative to traditional postdoctoral studies. We seek leaders who are passionate in using innovative approaches to study the frontiers of immunology and inflammation, including neuro-immunology, cancer immunology, autoimmunity, host-microbe interactions (mutualistic to pathogenic), infectious disease, immunometabolism, systems immunology, immune engineering, and other inflammatory-related diseases. The chosen candidate will join a supportive and diverse group of highly interactive faculty in the Salk NOMIS Center of Immunobiology and Microbial Pathogenesis.

Candidates should be recent PhD or MD graduates, at most two years from graduation, with demonstrated excellence in research and leadership. Salk Fellows are typically appointed for a period of five years after a successful review at the end of year three. Salk Fellow appointees are eligible for consideration for promotion to Assistant Professor at the Salk Institute. Mentoring is key to a Salk Fellow’s success and our Fellows are supported with financial and mentoring resources that allow them to launch their independent career, recruit trainees and establish stable funding.

Salk Fellows are often interdisciplinary scientists who establish new fields and integrate diverse approaches (e.g. cutting-edge genetic and animal models, metabolic and molecular assays, computer science, mathematics, imaging, computational biology, physics, machine learning, synthetic biology or engineering) to address fundamental biological questions in the broad areas of immunology, inflammation and infectious disease described above. Prospective Fellows’ are encouraged and supported to pursue exciting and innovative science.

Referees should also address candidates’ readiness to start and operate an independent lab and their potential to benefit from an accelerated path to an independent research career.

The expected pay range for this position is $85,000 to $100,000, $115,000 for computational roles per annum.  Salk Institute provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the institute reasonably expects to pay for a position. POSITION OPEN: HEAD OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING - PURDUE UNIVERSITY

Dane A. Miller Head of the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering

Purdue University is seeking a dynamic and innovative leader to serve as the next Dane A. Miller Head of the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering. This is a rare opportunity to lead a strong and growing Biomedical Engineering school at a time when it is poised to benefit tremendously from major University initiatives. The first is Purdue University in Indianapolis - Purdue University’s first comprehensive urban campus which will be a fully integrated extension of our flagship campus in West Lafayette. This will facilitate closer and new partnerships of the Weldon School with the Indiana School of Medicine located minutes from our new downtown campus. This will provide the Weldon School faculty and students close access to the start-up and industry ecosystems in Indianapolis. The second major opportunity stems from Purdue University’s investments in the Purdue Computes initiative. This includes major investments in the Institute for Physical AI in which the application of AI for human health is one of 4 focal points. Purdue Computes also includes a $100M investment in the Birck Nanotechnology Center with upgrades to equipment for microelectronics and semiconductor fabrication. This will significantly help implantable and wearable biomedical devices work in the Weldon school and open new partnership opportunities with semiconductor and microelectronics industries.

The Weldon School has grown to over 500 students, 30 primary faculty, 30 affiliated faculty, 1,500 program alumni, with 100,000 ft² of laboratory space, $15 million of annual extramural expenditures, and an MD/PhD program with IU School of Medicine. The Weldon School has a rich history of excellence and collaboration with industry to bring impactful innovations in healthcare from research to patient use. Our fundamental research, education, and translation missions have resulted in 100 US patents, $30 million in licensing royalties, 25 start-up companies, and extramural funding from NIH, NSF, DOD and other sources, impacting 3 million patients worldwide and creating a unique and diverse experiential learning environment for both undergraduate and graduate education. A powerhouse in engineering, Purdue was recently ranked the fifth most innovative university in America by US News & World Report, and its graduate program in engineering was ranked #4 nationally. MCKINSEY AND COMPANY RECRUITING NEWS

MIT ALUMNI ADVISORS HUB - ADVISING OPPORTUNITY FOR MIT STUDENTS

The MIT Alumni Advisors Hub is an online platform that students can use to ask for advice when they need it—from MIT alumni around the world. Students can get advice on their job and internship search, conduct a mock interview or informational interview, explore career paths and future entrepreneurial pursuits, and navigating life at MIT.

MIT has a diverse range of career fairs, only a few of which are run by Career Advising & Professional Development. Others are managed by student organizations or academic departments. MIT students are also welcome at some fairs hosted by companies, professional organizations, and other universities.

MIT'S IGRAD FINANCIAL LITERACY & CAREER RESOURCES PORTAL

The OGE sponsors MIT's iGrad financial literacy portal, with resources to help with financial support.

The iGrad Financial Literacy platform (offered for free to the entire MIT community in collaboration with the MIT Federal Credit Union) is customized for MIT with videos, articles, games,  job board, searchable scholarship database, and interactive modules on a wide range of topics, including emergency-funding, credit card management, identity protection, spending smarts, etc. it is a great financial literacy tool for students and the MIT community in general.

CAPD OFFERS THE VERSATILE PHD RESOURCE TOOL

MIT Career Advising & Professional Development (CAPD) is pleased to announce MIT’s subscription to The Versatile PhD, a web-based resource for PhDs considering careers beyond academia. Our subscription, generously supported by OGE, can be accessed by students and alumni via CAPD’s webpage and student CareerBridge accounts. Once students register, they can simply log in to the site directly (www.versatilephd.com)
