We are writing to invite you to the Industry Problem Solving Workshop "Systems Modelling in the Pharmaceutical Industry" hosted by the Centre for Quantitative Analysis and Modelling and the Fields Institute (http://www.fields.utoronto.ca/activities/20-21/systems-modelling). Due to the ongoing pandemic, this year’s edition of the workshop will be held as a 3 hour webinar on July 16 from 12-3pm EDT. The virtual event will include presentations by industrial experts in pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) and quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP) modelling, followed by a panel on industry career paths in modelling.
The aim of the original one-week long workshop was to equip graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in mathematics and related disciplines with the tools necessary to solve common problems encountered in the pharmaceutical industry. Our focus was on the development of pharmacometric skills to approach questions centered on drug development and dose/therapy optimization using a variety of state-of-the-art QSP methodologies, also known as systems modelling. This year's virtual workshop is a shortened version addressing these same subjects, and is an opportunity to ask everything and anything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask about QSP, PK/PD, population PK (PopPK), virtual populations (VPop), and opportunities in industry.

Medical hackathons and un-conferences are now an every-weekend occurrence. And both redesign and innovation promise to change medicine as we know it. It’s all happening right here, right now. But the problem is that many of us don’t know it. Despite Boston’s innovative energy and a solid medical infrastructure, many medical providers and health care entrepreneurs remain in the dark about the opportunities, events and work happening in and around the city of Boston – and across the country. That’s where we come in.
At Medtech Boston, we highlight exciting medical innovation work in and around the city of Boston. We aim to start a discussion about the most exciting and controversial new healthcare offerings, igniting a new reputation for Boston as a city with first-class medical research and patient care, but also as a city full of passionate people who use new technology to think big thoughts about medicine’s most pressing problems.

The goal of the Global Health and Medical Humanities Initiative (GHMHI) is to provide MIT students the training to analyze critically the determinants of health and roles of medicine in society from historical and cross-cultural perspectives.
Global Health programs in medical schools, schools of public health, and universities and colleges across the U.S. emphasize how biomedical training, research, and practice, as well as interdisciplinary collaborations beyond the health sciences, are necessary to improve the determinants of health—whether social, political, economic, or biological.
Medical Humanities is a subfield of medicine that draws on the humanities, arts, and social sciences to analyze medical education and clinical practice.

Are you currently practicing socially distancing? MIT researchers are interested in studying how the general population responds to isolation and are recruiting volunteers to complete online surveys.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Human Systems Lab is recruiting for online surveys to examine individual responses to social distancing/isolation related to the unique environment many of us find ourselves in because of COVID-19. The current distancing guidelines create a unique opportunity to examine responses to living/working in isolated and confined environments (ICE) in the general population, since most research in this area is performed on highly trained, small groups of individuals such as astronauts.
The survey results may help us better understand how to prepare humans for living in isolation, such as in missions to the International Space Station, working in remote environments like Antarctica, or even in a future space colony where a diverse set of people will be part of the community.
If you are at least 18 years old, fluent in English, and currently practicing social distancing you are eligible to participate. Eligible volunteers will be asked to complete daily online surveys (~15 min) while they are social distancing. Please use the link below for more information.

Graduate Student Short-Term Emergency Funding assists graduate students by providing financial support when they need help with unexpected and unavoidable emergency expenses. Typically, registered students apply for funds when they have exhausted all other resources. If Graduate Student Short-Term Emergency Fund disbursements are granted, they do not have to be repaid. Graduate Student Short-Term Emergency Fund disbursements may be subject to taxation based on withholding rates set by the IRS.
Student Eligibility: Be currently registered in an MIT PhD program or Master’s Program. Students on leave from MIT during Fall or Spring either semester are not eligible to receive the award.
Eligible expenses: Unanticipated or unusual expenses that may have a negative impact on the student's educational experience and well-being. These expenses most commonly include basic living necessities and travel expenses due to family emergencies.
Costs must have been incurred or become due while continuously enrolled during the current academic year. Each request will be considered individually and decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis at the sole discretion of OGE.
Expenses that are not eligible: Personal debt and other pre-existing voluntary obligations, tuition and program-related expenses, and other costs that may be covered by financial aid or loans.

The Stanford Molecular Imaging Scholars (SMIS) program is an integrated, three-year cross-disciplinary postdoctoral training program at Stanford University that brings together 33 faculty mentors from 14 departments in the Schools of Medicine, Engineering, and Humanities and Sciences. Molecular imaging, the non-invasive monitoring of specific molecular and biochemical processes in living organisms, continues to expand its applications in the detection and management of cancer. SMIS faculty mentors provide a diverse training environment spanning biology, physics, mathematics, biocomputation/biomedical informatics, engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, cancer biology, immunology, and medical sciences. The centerpiece of the SMIS program is the opportunity for trainees (PhD or MD with an emphasis on PhD) to conduct innovative molecular imaging research that is co-mentored by faculty in complementary disciplines. SMIS trainees also engage in specialized coursework, seminars, national conferences, clinical rounds, including ethics training and the responsible conduct of research. The three-year program culminates with the preparation and review of a mock NIH grant proposal, in support of trainee transition to an independent career in cancer molecular imaging.

Research Fellow in Digital Health: Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Division of Digital Psychiatry
(co-sponsored, dual appointment with the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School)
This unique research fellowship at the intersection of digital health, smartphone apps, digital phenotyping, biostatistics, and patient care offers the opportunity to work at the frontier of mobile health at Harvard Medical School. This fellowship focuses on evaluation, analysis, and dissemination of clinically focused insights derived from novel data obtained from clinical research studies focusing on college mental health and serious mental illnesses.
The Digital Psychiatry Division (https://www.digitalpsych.org/) of the Department of Psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Harvard Medical School Affiliated Teaching Hospital, is leading efforts to translate advances in digital phenotyping and smartphone interventions for mental health to clinical solutions to improve the care of patients with illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression. The team is led by John Torous MD, board certified in both psychiatry and clinical informatics and offers the opportunity to make a strong impact and improve mental health with new technologies.

With this current opening we are seeking a candidate with strong quantitative skillsets applicable to digital mental health including time series analysis, imputation, creation of novel models, and application machine learning methods. Longitudinal patient level data is today generated from smartphone sensors, surveys, and metadata with the opportunity to combine neuroimaging and genetic data sets. Immediate goals include creating models of relapse prediction based on smartphone data to provide patients with early warning of elevated risk. The successful candidate would be expected to lead several projects at the intersection of digital mental health, global health, and clinical care that would result in first author publications. Finally, the successful candidate would be expected to work with our team in pursuing both industry and academic grants to expand this work.
An ideal candidate has been awarded or has nearly completed the requirements for a doctoral degree or foreign equivalent and is a trainee pursuing advanced studies beyond the doctoral level in preparation for an independent career in quantitative data science. In collaboration with and under the mentorship of the Principle Investigator (PI), a successful Research Fellow will engage in activities in the digital mental health space that will further his or her professional development. The position can be co-sponsored with the Division of Biomedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School and offer protected time there as well as at the medical center.

Martinos Center Research Fellow in Simultaneous PET/MR Neuroimaging

We are seeking two postdoctoral fellows to join our team to pursue research in simultaneous PET/MR imaging in neuroscience applications. Our research focuses on developing and applying novel PET/MRI methods to investigate the neurochemical underpinnings of psychiatric and neurological disorders. We have projects and training opportunities in the following area: (1) Quantify neuroreceptor dynamics and evaluate functional consequences with pharmacological imaging in animal models and human subjects, with applications in pain, addiction, and other psychiatric disorders; and (2) Assess the impacts of neurovascular coupling/function on PET radiotracer kinetics, with applications in neurodegenerative disorders.
Our research programs are highly translational spanning from animal models, first-in-human studies, to clinical applications. The appointment as a Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School research fellow will be for 1 year with possibility for extension based on performance and the availability of funding. The positions are available immediately.
The successful candidate will be a highly motivated researcher with a desire to begin an independent career related to or involving neuroimaging. The position requires a PhD degree in Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Neuroscience or a related field. However, we will consider candidates of any scientific background. This position requires experience in analysis of medical imaging data. Experience with MRI or PET is a plus. Extremely strong candidates with minimal imaging experience are still encouraged to apply. Strong written and oral English communication skills are required.

Postdoctoral Fellow – Mathematical Modeling and Simulation
Quantitative Systems Pharmacology (QSP) is a discipline that uses mechanistic mathematical models and disease platforms to enhance the robustness and quality of decision-making from exploratory research through clinical development. The QSP group at Pfizer is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral candidate to develop and analyze mechanistic mathematical models of gene therapy for clinical applications. This Postdoctoral Fellowship is an opportunity to work within a dynamic group who are at the forefront of the application of mechanistic systems models to address critical uncertainties in drug discovery and development.
Pfizer is working to pioneer gene therapy breakthroughs that change patients’ lives. We hope to unlock the promise of gene therapy for patients worldwide living with rare genetic diseases for whom the current standard of care falls short.
A successful candidate will develop and analyze mathematical models of adeno-associated virus (AAV) based gene therapy that integrates biological knowledge and available data from Pfizer’s clinical programs, with the goal of providing tools for pre-clinical to clinical translation, dose selection, and clinical trial design. The Postdoctoral Fellow will work collaboratively with biologists, clinicians, clinical pharmacologists, pharmacometricians, and QSP and nonclinical modelers to improve designs for effective and durable gene therapies in multiple therapeutic areas, with an initial focus on rare genetic diseases.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will participate in Pfizer’s Worldwide Research and Development (WRD) Postdoctoral Program. Postdoctoral Fellows pursue their research and career training in a culture steeped in the translation of basic science discovery into difference-making medicines for patients of all ages and geographies. The Postdoctoral Fellow will develop and utilize mathematical models toward enhanced quantitative understanding of the effectiveness and durability of a gene therapy treatment based on literature and internal data from our clinical trials. This may include but is not limited to:
- Employing modeling and simulation techniques for predicting gene therapy outcomes
- Identifying relevant data (in vitro and in vivo preclinical and clinical study data) for model development, optimization, and validation
- Designing nonclinical experiments aimed towards generating data for model validation and testing of relevant hypotheses
- Effectively communicating model results and outcomes to scientists in both quantitative and non-quantitative disciplines
- Primary authorship on scientific publications and presenting at internal and external scientific meetings
- Recent Ph.D. (0-3 years) in Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Biology, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline with strong numerical components focusing on mathematical modeling and simulation.
- Training and/or experience in mechanistic modeling of biological or physiological systems is required
- Understanding of theory, principles, and statistical aspects of mathematical modeling and simulation, including parameter estimation techniques
- In-depth understanding of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and how these can be applied in the development of complex models of biological pathways and systems
- In-depth, hands-on knowledge of modeling and simulation software (MATLAB, C/C++, julia preferred)
- Keen interest in learning new areas of biology and building on a solid foundation of quantitative and computational skills
- Self-directed with ability to work independently
- Team player
- Excellent communication and writing skills
- Primary authorship on relevant publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals
- Must be willing to relocate to Cambridge, MA, USA

On Wednesday, 06/17, at 5:30pm EDT, Sanith Wijesinghe (PhD '03 in Aeronautics/Astronautics) will share his personal stories. After obtaining his master's degree at the Imperial college London, Sanith came to MIT in 1996 to pursue his PhD in Aero/Astro, where he focused on developing computational fluid dynamics algorithms to model instabilities in nuclear fusion under the supervision of Prof. Nicolas Hadjiconstantinou. Sanith served as the President of the MIT Graduate Student Council during his time at MIT. His work had won him the Karl Taylor Compton Prize, MIT's highest student prize for outstanding achievement in citizenship. After MIT, Sanith went for a 2-year postdoc position at New England Complex Systems Institute before joining the finance sector. Working as the VP of Project Deployment at MillenniumIT (USA) Inc, Sanith helped build algorithmic trading strategies for brokers. Sanith now works as the Innovation Area Lead at MITRE, a nonprofit organization based in Massachusetts and Virginia that manages federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs) supporting several U.S. government agencies.
