MICROTEACHING TRACK

About the Program
The Microteaching Track is a sequence of two microteaching workshops. In a microteaching workshop, a small group of students each present a brief teaching demo and receive feedback from peers and TLL staff. Following the first microteaching workshop, participants incorporate the feedback they received into their teaching demo and present the improved version in the second session.

Note: To receive a Letter of Completion and count toward a Certificate, participants must have previously completed the Lesson Planning TrackThe Microteaching Track is the only series that can be taken more than once. For more information about the Teaching Tracks and how to earn a certificate, go to our Grad Teaching Development Tracks page.

AEROASTRO'S CERTIFICATE IN AEROSPACE INNOVATION - REGISTRATION IS OPEN

Registration for the Certificate in Aerospace Innovation is now open! This certificate program, entering its third year, is intended for students who are interested in learning more about entrepreneurship and/or interested in potentially starting their own ventures/firms in aerospace in the future. This program also provides opportunities for students to meet with alumni and other folks, who can share their own experiences with their own start-ups. 

The two-year certificate program, offered by the MIT Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics, in collaboration with the Martin Trust MIT Center for Entrepreneurship, is open to graduate students (S.M./Ph.D.), postdocs and staff across the MIT community. It takes place this Fall, IAP, and Spring semesters, and it is comprised of three elements:

  • Classes: Coursework in the aerospace-focused domain and in the entrepreneurship-focused domain offered by the Sloan School of Management. The certificate program is optional, but some associated classes and workshops may carry academic credit that can be counted toward a degree program.
  • Seminar Series: Aerospace Innovator’s Seminar Series features speakers from some of the biggest names in entrepreneurial aerospace — many of whom started from exactly where you are now, as students at MIT! Please note that attendance is mandatory. 
  • Entrepreneur Workshop or Summer Program Participation: During the Independent Activities Period (IAP) in January, students will participate in the Aerospace Innovation Workshop, where they will be expected to draft a business plan and pitch deck for a new aerospace-related startup. Working in teams, students will present their business plans identifying the underlying technical innovation and potential for business disruption to a panel of aerospace-affiliated venture capitalists and entrepreneurs for feedback and scoring. One winning pitch will be awarded a sponsored prize of $10K.

Alternatively, students can satisfy the requirements for the certificate by participating in some of the hands-on MIT summer programs in entrepreneurship and business acceleration, such as MIT Delta v or the Venture Exploration Program.

Students must complete the program requirements within two years of signing up.

There are enormous challenges facing the failing, fragmented US health system.  Despite being an advanced economy, we spend $4.3T on healthcare which represents roughly 20% of our GDP – far more than any other nation.  Despite this, costs accelerate, and outcomes are lackluster. For these same reasons, there are enormous opportunities to impact lives and elevate health.  This presentation will offer an overview of the US health care system geared to the non-healthcare entrepreneur seeking to advance their understanding of the industry and successfully navigate the landscape.

Dr. Anthony Dowidowicz serves as the Executive Medical Director of Regence BlueCross BlueShield and is an emergency physician by clinical training.  In addition to his medical degree, Anthony received his MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management where he spent additional time pursing advanced research in system dynamics.  He is the founder of the MIT Sloan Physicians Group and serves on the Health System Initiative Board. 

MESOSCALE BRAIN MAPPING SYMPOSIUM

The Center for Mesoscale Mapping in the Martinos Center at MGH and the HST-based Neuroimaging Training Program are pleased to announce “Mesoscale Brain Mapping: Bridging Scales and Modalities in Neuroimaging,” a one-day, in person symposium bringing together researchers using a range of imaging techniques to study brain function at the intersection of the micro- and macro- scales.  Together we will explore the frontiers of our ability to visualize and quantify circuitry within a cortical column, between thalamic nuclei, and use these techniques to improve our understanding of neuropsychiatric disorders. This Symposium is for you whether you are an established investigator or an aspiring trainee, whether you work in pre-clinical models or with patients, whether you are clinician or basic scientist.

AIMBE PUBLIC POLICY INSTITUTE FOR STUDENTS & POST DOCS

AIMBE is bringing back its highly acclaimed Public Policy Training Institute for Rising Leaders on October 30-31, 2023, in Washington, DC. This workshop informs undergraduate and graduate students and post docs about the policy landscape that surrounds the scientific enterprise. Top government officials, industry representatives, and senior leaders at the FDA and NIH will lead small-group discussions.  For the very first time, AIMBE will host this event in the historic Rayburn Building in the U.S. House of Representatives – setting the stage for an unmatched experience.

NORTHEAST SYMPOSIUM ON BIOMEDICAL OPTICS (NESBO)

Registration is now open for the Northeast Symposium on Biomedical Optics (NESBO) to be held on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at MIT E25-111.

NESBO is a symposium organized by postdocs and graduate students where similarly early career scientists give invited talks about their research in the general area of biomedical imaging and sensing. The symposium is also a networking and professional development opportunity for early career scientists. This year's sessions in biomedical optics include: neurophotonics, translational biomedical optics, and coherent imaging at different scales.

Also included in NESBO is a poster competition (with prizes!), a panel discussion on how to choose between a career path in academia vs. industry, and a networking event at a nearby venue following the symposium (drink and food provided!).

All graduate students and postdocs are welcome to register whether they are in the field of biomedical optics or just looking to learn more.

Communities Reimagine Health, Safety, and Justice: Working at the Intersection of Abolition and Public Health

On 2021, the American Public Health Association adopted “Advancing Public Health Interventions to Address the Harms of the Carceral System” a policy statement that outlines strategies for “moving toward the abolition of carceral systems and building in their stead just and equitable structures that advance the public’s health.” 

On October 27, 2023, the Vertex Symposium returns for a free, hybrid program on the topic Communities Reimagine Health, Safety, and Justice: Working at the Intersection of Abolition and Public Health. In this day-long convening, we explore how communities, advocates, scholars, and policymakers are working at the intersection of abolition and public health to create an antiracist future where everyone thrives.

MEDTECH BOSTON INFORMATION SOURCE & CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Boston has long been known as a medical mecca of scientific discovery. Boston’s healthcare professionals and administrators are adopting practices from other high-risk and service industries. The ‘big data’ movement is thriving, fundamentally changing our healthcare delivery systems. Digital health investments are higher than ever before. MIT PILLAR AI COLLECTIVE FELLOWSHIP - CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

This is a call for applications for a *new* fellowship opportunity: the MIT Pillar AI Collective Fellowship. These fellowships are designated for Masters or PhD students in their final year, conducting research in the areas of AI, Machine Learning, and Data Science, with the goal of supporting translation. Fellows will be expected to participate in programming for the Pillar AI Collective, including lunch-and-learns and expert office hours.  Make sure to check out the MIT Pillar AI Collective website for information about past fellows and activities.

Pillar AI Collective Fellowship Details

  • Up to 3 one-term fellowships will be provided in the amount of $49,744 per fellowship for stipend, tuition, and single health insurance, to be used during the Fall 2023 term.
  • Fellowships cannot be deferred. There will be a second call for this fellowship later this fall for Spring 2024 fellows.

Application requirements

  • Cover sheet  – required for Non-SoE applicants.
  • CV
  • A one-page research statement from the student, which includes a description of the technology or research innovation that they believe has potential for commercialization. Please include links to research papers as appropriate.
  • Half-page personal statement from student, reflecting on their potential as an entrepreneur and the qualities, skills, and experiences that reflect the student’s desire and ability to commercialize new technology.
  • A letter of recommendation from the student’s research advisor that speaks to the applicant’s entrepreneurial qualities, including determination, creativity, flexibility and decisiveness.  The letter of recommendation should be emailed to soe-fellowship [at] mit.edu (soe-fellowship[at]mit[dot]edu).

Longform Blog - Editors Wanted
Do you feel strongly about syntax, diction, or the Oxford comma? Or are you more of a “big picture” type of person? In either case, you’re in luck: the Science in the News (SITN) blog is looking for editors—no experience necessary!

The SITN blog aims to bridge the communication gap between scientists and the general public by providing insights into trending scientific stories. As an editor, you (and your team) will provide feedback on articles written by fellow graduate students. You will also have the opportunity to work directly with authors from the topic selection stage to final publication. Editing teams typically review one article per month, so the time commitment (4-6 hours/month) is very manageable.

STUDENT RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES: SCHAEFER LAB (BWH)

The Schaefer Laboratory is looking for motivated graduate students who are interested in conducting lab-based research – applicants from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Our translational research efforts are centered on the biology, genetics, and molecular mechanisms of sarcomas with the goal to develop novel therapeutics. We use a combination of genomic, structural, functional, and multiplexed imaging studies to uncover the biologic mechanisms driving sarcoma oncogenesis. One major focus of our current research efforts is to decipher the mechanisms of cell cycle perturbations in sarcoma, paving the way for the discovery of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

The 2024 KI Image Awards competition is now OPEN.

What would I do? Graduate Community Fellows work on projects and assignments that enhance the graduate community at MIT in targeted, impactful ways. Each Fellow reports to a staff member in the OGE or a partner organization. See specifics below.

What are the requirements? Must meet minimal eligibility requirements and agree to the terms of appointment. Appointment periods for Fellow positions vary. All positions serve 10 hours per week, and receive compensation of $700 per month.

SENIOR BIOPHARMACEUTICAL ANALYST POSITION OPPORTUNITY

Columbia Threadneedle Investments, the global asset management subsidiary of Ameriprise Financial, is seeking a Biopharmaceutical Analyst to be based in Boston, MA or New York, NY.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct primary research on the broader industry and specific companies through key opinion leader calls, earnings calls, management interactions, company visits, medical meetings, and sell-side events.
  • Find clinically relevant innovations that could lead to large market opportunities.
  • Formulate hypothesis on therapeutic innovations and identify investment ideas that can best leverage the hypothesis.
  • Identify and maintain clinical catalyst calendar including clinical trial data, regulatory events or other important events relevant to the industry.
  • Proactively work with healthcare team analysts and portfolio managers to formulate thesis on investment ideas.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of dedicated clinical, laboratory or patient care experience at an academic institution or industry participant such as a drug development company or contract service clinical provider

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MD/PhD or equivalent in the sciences, clinical science or medicine
  • MBA and/or CFA
  • 7-10 years' experience preferred.
  • Tacit understanding of clinical trial design and drug pathways
  • Ability to analyze preclinical and clinical data and adjudicate trial conduct.
  • Strong analytical and statistical skills

STANFORD PANDEMIC PREPAREDNESS HUB POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS PROGRAM

We’d like to invite you to apply for the Pandemic Preparedness Hub Postdoctoral Fellows Program.

Overview

Stanford University is recruiting outstanding postdoctoral fellows for a fellowship in Pandemic Preparedness. This interdisciplinary fellowship will train recent doctoral graduates from any field who would like to pursue a career in advancing science to prevent or mitigate infectious disease pandemics. Fellows may work with any Stanford faculty members who are affiliated with the new Pandemic Preparedness Hub. Relevant disciplines may include epidemiology, community health, ecology, immunology, clinical-translational science, genetics, biomedical data sciences and health policy. Trainees who have trained in other disciplines and would like to transition their career to focus on infectious diseases are encouraged to apply and should demonstrate their commitment to this path. Each fellow will create a professional development plan with a professional mentorship team that includes their scientific mentor and senior faculty in the Pandemic Preparedness Hub. Faculty and fellows will convene regularly to share their work and identify opportunities for synergies across disciplines. TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES AT THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH (NIH)

The National Institutes of Health’s Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education offers an extensive range of clinical research training opportunities to prepare the next generation of clinician-scientists. Brief descriptions of the programs are provided below. As world’s largest biomedical research agency, the NIH encourages future clinician-scientists and medical researchers to consider adding an NIH experience to their portfolio.

Graduate Medical Education
NIH currently sponsor 17 medical specialty or subspecialty programs which have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). We also jointly sponsor clinical training programs with extramural training partners, to include Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland, and the National Capital Consortium. Clinical Elective Programs

Postdoctoral Research Training Awards

Graduate Partnerships Program

MIT'S IGRAD FINANCIAL LITERACY & CAREER RESOURCES PORTAL

The OGE sponsors MIT's iGrad financial literacy portal, with resources to help with financial support.

The iGrad Financial Literacy platform (offered for free to the entire MIT community in collaboration with the MIT Federal Credit Union) is customized for MIT with videos, articles, games,  job board, searchable scholarship database, and interactive modules on a wide range of topics, including emergency-funding, credit card management, identity protection, spending smarts, etc. it is a great financial literacy tool for students and the MIT community in general.
