"BEYOND THE LAB" -  NEW IAP COURSE ON STARTUPS

We are super excited to launch the first E14 IAP course starting January 2022! Based on questions we often get from folks curious about startups or working out details for translation of their work and the tremendous momentum in the MAS venture community and all the recent successes (Formlabs, Tulip, Culture Biosciences, OPT, Wise Systems, Figur8…) we thought we’d put a program to map out the startup journey, connect and reconnect inspiring founders with future founders and pull together a cohort of peers who are at various stages.

“Beyond the Lab” IAP course description

Are you a scientist or engineer curious about starting a deep tech company? Do you want to visit MIT startups in action and learn from founders who have successfully launched ventures out of their labs? Do you want to connect with venture investors dedicated to supporting MIT founders?

This course will cover the basics of launching your founder journey and will include trips to Boston-area startups across growth stages. You will join a cohort of future founders with continued opportunities to engage beyond IAP. This course is designed for any student or postdoc thinking about starting a company and we hope to build a diverse cohort of participants across backgrounds and interests. The course is sponsored by E14 Fund, the early stage venture capital firm from and for the MIT startup community.

If you are interested in this course, please complete this form by December 2nd to apply to join the Beyond the Lab cohort for IAP 2022 (January 24th - 28th). This course is designed for any student or postdoc thinking about starting a company and we hope to build a diverse cohort of participants across backgrounds and interests.

SEEKING CLINICAL EXPERTS FOR 6.871/HST.956 - MACHINE LEARNING FOR HEALTHCARE AT MIT

We are inviting individuals with a clinical background and interest in machine learning for healthcare to apply to the Advanced Study Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology https://professional.mit.edu/advanced-study-program-application. Through this program, students can enroll in 6.871/HST.956 Machine Learning for Healthcare from the MIT Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology.

Over the 16-week semester, which begins in February 2022, students in this class will learn about different machine learning methods used in healthcare and understand their limitations. Through the assignments, students will learn how to apply these methods to clinical data. The course includes guest lectures from physicians, scientists, and industry, and a course project in which students will collaborate and work with a mentor. Our aim is to motivate collaborations between computer scientists and clinicians. To be able to fully participate, it is expected that students with a clinical background should be motivated to work towards a basic proficiency in Python programming and develop an understanding of the fundamentals of machine learning prior to the start of the class. Resources can be provided to guide learning.

Students will be expected to attend class in-person. We will make accommodations, where possible, for students that need to be partially remote. These students should contact Professor David Sontag and the course staff at mlhc22mit [at] gmail.com (mlhc22mit[at]gmail[dot]com) to discuss further. For those that are unable to apply to the Advanced Study Program, but are still interested in participating in the class, we will consider listeners pending space availability. Students admitted through the Advanced Study Program will be prioritized and obtain academic credit for their coursework.

MIT DEEP HEALTHCARE INNOVATION & VENTURE EXPLORATION PROGRAM (DHIVE)

A Deep Dive into Healthcare Entrepreneurship

MIT Sandbox is launching an exciting, new IAP program focused on healthcare entrepreneurship! MIT DHIVE IAP 2022 invites undergraduate and graduate students to gain deep knowledge and insight into one of three healthcare issues as they explore entrepreneurial solutions to associated challenges and needs. Learn from experts in the field, engage in brainstorming and ideation activities, and learn how transform ideas to viable solutions.

Students apply for and participate in a specific DHIVE track community as a paid intern or participant:

  • Down Syndrome and Similar Disabilities - enhance the lives of people with Down Syndrome and different intellectual abilities or challenges; offered in partnership with the MIT Deshpande Center
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) - empower patients and transform the approach to maintenance of chronic diseases; offered in partnership with the MIT Center for Microbiome Informatics and Therapeutics
  • Long Covid and Lyme Disease – develop novel method and technologies to address the range of issues caused by infectious diseases

NEW RESOURCES TO PROMOTE GRADUATE STUDENT WELLBEING

We are excited to share two new resources to help graduate students care for and prioritize their wellbeing.

In partnership with the Health Promotion Working Group and with the input from faculty, staff, and students, we have launched DoingWell at MIT. The DoingWell website centralizes many of the resources that are available to help students to navigate their own wellbeing journey, including information on how to get support and services to help them practice healthy habits.

We have also launched a new course, Mental Health and Wellbeing for Graduate Students, in the Atlas Learning Center to help graduate students understand common challenges of the graduate student experience and how to navigate support and resources to prioritize their wellbeing. This course, which is also valuable to any faculty and staff who work with graduate students, was developed in partnership with the Division of Student Life, Office of the Vice Chancellor, and MIT Medical.

This is just the beginning of our efforts to promote a culture of student wellbeing at MIT. We are excited to hear your feedback on these resources. Join the Writing Together Online program organized by the Writing and Communication Center to finish your writing projects before the Thanksgiving break. Our 90-minute sessions create a community of writers who connect, set realistic goals, and write together to motivate each other. This program is open to graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, researchers, or all, who are actively writing their proposals, manuscripts, or thesis/dissertation chapters.

Prof. Gilliard is a native of Hartsville, South Carolina. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Clemson University. He has been named to Forbes Magazine's 30 under 30 list in Science, became a 2021 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow, and earned a 2021 Packard Fellowship. He also serves on the editorial advisory board for Chemical Communications, Chem Catalysis, Inorganic Chemistry, and the International Advisory Board for Angewandte Chemie.

Phyla is pioneering the use of bacteriophages to target disease-causing bacteria without affecting commensal microbiota, and developing consumer health products that can provide great results without harsh side effects or relapses.

Bio: Yug Varma, PhD is the CEO and Co-founder of Phyla and Phi Therapeutics, Inc. (“Phi”). As a trained microbiologist and synthetic biologist with a background in organic chemistry, Yug has spent his career working at the interface of microbiome research, synthetic biology, and next-generation sequencing. It was this research that led to his eventual desire to develop the next generation of whole cell therapeutics to treat chronic microbial diseases.

In previous years, this event has been held in person in Cambridge, MA, and has been focused on bringing together academic, clinical, and industrial scientists who work on liver or liver-related research.

This year, on November 18, 2021, we will gather in a digital format to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Arias Symposium by extending our reach to include speakers from across the globe, and also to welcome participants and attendees from anywhere in the world. 

Our program will include:

  • 10 plenary talks from scientists in 5 countries
  • a collection of ‘micro talks’ from junior scientists
  • a ‘fireside chat’ style discussion between Dr Arias and our current Symposium directors, Drs. Sangeeta Bhatia and Wolfram Goessling
  • ‘meet the expert’ small group discussions for which trainees can register to meet with our speakers over a virtual lunch break

MEDTECH BOSTON INFORMATION SOURCE & CALENDAR OF EVENTS

PHD ENGINEERING STUDENTS NEEDED FOR PENN STATE NSF LONGITUDINAL CAREER STUDY GRANT

NSF CAREER grant to study the experiences of current engineering graduate students over time in an effort to understand graduate student attrition and persistence in engineering. 

We are collecting longitudinal data using text-message survey methods, following participants over time.

This research is conducted via very short surveys conducted via text message on your cell phone.  If you agree, and we select you for this study based on your screening criteria, you will receive very short surveys on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Monday and Wednesday surveys will take approximately 30 seconds. Weekly, monthly, and end-of-term (December, May, August) surveys on Fridays will take 1 to 3 minutes. 

If you are interested in participating in this study, please complete the online survey link below. The second page of the survey is the informed consent section, which includes more information regarding the study, including measures taken to protect confidentiality, and you will be able to download the full informed consent document.

Consecutive participation will be rewarded with a $10 Amazon.com gift card each month of participation (missing fewer than 2 Monday/Wednesday surveys or 1 Friday survey each month). In addition, participants who complete each of the monthly surveys and semesterly surveys each term (December, May, August) will be entered in a drawing for one of three $50 Amazon.com gift cards at the end of each term. 

Although you have the option to be removed from our study at any time, ideally participants would remain in the study for a year, at which point we will reach out to see if you would be interested in continuing your participation. MIT MUSEUM - WE NEED YOUR INPUT!

It’s 6 months-and-counting to the opening of the new MIT Museum in Kendall Square, and we need your input!

One of the new Museum’s showpiece exhibit experiences will be an “MIT Community Data Project” – a dynamic, wall-sized visualization of input shared every day by each museum visitor.

But that wall will be empty on opening day, unless we get some seed data to start with.

This is where you come in.

Our aim is to get at what makes the MIT community so unique. By providing your input, your (anonymous) data will be translated into a visual element and incorporated into the wall.

RECRUITING - VAGINAL MICROBIOME STUDY

We invite you to participate in the 2020 HST Microbiome Study, under the direction of the MIT Center for Microbiome Informatics and Therapeutics (CMIT)! Our research study aims to assess the effects of clothing breathability on yeast-bacterial interactions in the vaginal microbiome. We are recruiting healthy women between 18 and 50 years of age with regular menstruation cycles. We encourage everyone to apply, as we hope to have a diverse pool of study participants!

The study will be conducted over a two month period. During each month, participants will wear underwear (provided!) and lower-body clothing of either high or low breathability for seven days. Participants will come to building E25 to collect their own vaginal swab samples on days 0, 3, and 7 for each of the two months.

Participants will be provided the necessary undergarments, which they can keep after the study!

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION STUDY - MIT BEHAVIORAL RESEARCH LAB

Have you used virtual conferencing platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams during the COVID-19 Pandemic? Do you wonder how our interactions on these platforms compare to in-person ones?

If so, the MIT Behavioral Research Lab (BRL) invites you to participate in an in-person study investigating how virtual conferencing platforms affect interpersonal communication. The study will involve your completing surveys and participating in two 10-minute virtual conversations with other participants. FLIPPING FAILURE - PEER SUPPORT COMMUNITY RESOURCE

Flipping Failure is a collection of video stories told by MIT students about their path towards resilience when faced with challenge at MIT.

The goal of this community initiative is to provide visibility to stories of academic challenge and resilience so that we can begin shifting the conversation around struggle from something to be ashamed of to something that is human. Struggling is not only part of the human experience, but it is often the result of tackling difficult challenges and learning experiences. We hope that watching peers talk about their challenges and hearing about the productive and healthy strategies they used to cope will help other students discover their own path towards resilience and self-acceptance.

What is iREFS?
MIT iREFS is a student group that offers confidential peer-to-peer support to fellow graduate students. 

What do we do?
Our mission is to ensure graduate student wellness, especially in times of uncertainty, stress, and conflict. We provide confidential, peer-to-peer conflict support and coaching. We also provide informed referrals to MIT resources and offices. Further, we organize conflict management workshops for the MIT graduate student community on active listening and difficult conversations.

Please feel free to contact us if you are looking to talk to a fellow grad student regarding an issue that is a cause of concern/stress for you. MULTIPLE POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW POSITIONS IN MULTISCALE MODELING IN EMBRYONIC DEVELOPMENT AND OTHER AREAS

Biocomplexity Institute - Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering - Indiana University, Bloomington 

The Biocomplexity Institute (biocomplexity.indiana.edu) at Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering as part of its participation in Purdue University’s NSF-funded EMBRIO Institute, has open postdoctoral positions developing multicellular, multi-scale mechanistic computational models of wound closure, epiboly and early embryonic development in zebrafish. The candidate will work with faculty and student researchers to develop Cellular Potts and particle-based biomechanical models of zebrafish tissue dynamics and implement them in the CompuCell3D and Mechanica modeling frameworks. The models will be used to perform virtual experiments exploring mechanistic hypotheses about the interplay of biochemical signaling and mechanics leading to emergent regulation in tissue dynamics. The candidate will receive training from members of the Biocomplexity and EMBRIO Institutes and relevant collaborators in developmental and cellular biology and computational, mathematical, agent-based, and biological modeling.

Minimum Qualifications: A PhD is required by start of appointment, in biology, bioengineering, biophysics, mathematical biology or a closely related field. Commitment to and expertise in developmental biology are essential. Prior publications in agent-based modeling, especially multi-cellular or biological network modeling are required. Experience with the Python programming language and dynamical systems are helpful but not required.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience, plus benefits.

1) Postdoctoral scholar in climate mitigation and biomass-based carbon dioxide removal solutions

Carnegie Institution for Science Department of Global Ecology (DGE) at Stanford is seeking creative, collaborative postdoctoral scholars to advance our work on climate change mitigation and adaptation solutions to food, energy and water systems. Specifically, we seek a Postdoctoral Fellow interested in food-energy-water systems and climate mitigation via biomass-based carbon dioxide removal solutions. Research will be highly data-driven, through quantitative research and spatial model development.

There will be flexibility regarding scientific questions to be studied, but potential areas of focus include:

  • Quantifying global biomass-based carbon dioxide removal potential;
  • Identifying options for negative carbon emissions via biomass based carbon dioxide removal;
  • Understanding the future competition of land and water resources for food, energy, and carbon management systems;
  • Investigating how biomass-based carbon dioxide removal can adapt agriculture to climate change;
  • Exploring pathways to reach net-zero GHG emissions in water-energy-food systems.

2) Postdoctoral scholar in sustainable agriculture and climate change

Carnegie Institution for Science Department of Global Ecology (DGE) at Stanford is seeking creative, collaborative postdoctoral scholars to advance our work on climate change mitigation and adaptation solutions to food, energy and water systems. MD ANDERSON TRIUMPH POSTDOCTORAL TRAINING PROGRAM

The MD Anderson Cancer Center CPRIT Research Training Program provides fundamental, interdisciplinary, and innovative training in cancer research at MD Anderson. This program is the continuation of a highly successful and comprehensive training program supported by the Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas. The program includes three tracks: the CPRIT TRIUMPH (Translational Research in Multidisciplinary Programs) post-doctoral, CPRIT Graduate Scholar, and CPRIT Summer Undergraduate Research Programs.

TRIUMPH (Translational Research in Multi-Disciplinary Program) Postdoctoral Fellowship provides training in clinical and translational research. The immediate goal of this program is to recruit talented and productive PhD students from top graduate programs to provide continued training in clinical and/or translational cancer research through didactic course work, clinical rotations, and unique, interdisciplinary mentorships. A long-term goal of this program is to produce translational scientists who can be teamed with suitable physician scientists to PI a translational research laboratory.

This is a three-year training program. First year postdoctoral fellows participate in a series of didactic clinical course work offered at the MD Anderson UTHealth Graduate School (GSBS), MD Anderson Cancer Center, or the UTHealth McGovern School of Medicine and strategically matched clinical rotations, while pursuing research in a basic or translational research laboratory. Second and third year fellows are co-mentored by a basic science/translational scientist mentor and a physician/clinical scientist mentor on clinical/translational research projects. The TRIUMPH postdoc will earn a certificate upon successful completion of the program.

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER AT THE INTERSECTION OF VIROLOGY AND FLUID PHYSICS

We are looking for a highly motivated individual as a postdoctoral researcher on a collaborative project at the interface of Fluids and Health driven by the Fluid Dynamics of Disease Transmission Laboratory at MIT, Cambridge, MA and the Mühlberger Laboratory at the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL) at Boston University, Boston, MA. The Fluid Dynamics of Disease Transmission Laboratory at MIT, directed by Prof. Bourouiba, has a strong research focus on fluid dynamics and modeling of infectious disease transmission and medical applications at various scales. Dr. Mühlberger’s laboratory at the NEIDL has a strong research focus on viral replication strategies and pathogenesis mechanism of highly pathogenic viruses, including filoviruses, henipaviruses, and more recently, SARS-CoV-2.

The project will focus on the study of currently poorly understood mechanisms of respiratory virus transmission through the lens of fluid- and bio-physics and will be part of an interdisciplinary effort to tackle important knowledge gaps in our understanding of the various phases of host-to-host transmission that are the root of pandemics for a range of viral diseases. Viruses of interest include SARS-CoV-2 and Nipah virus among others. Following applicable background checks and training, this position will require work in the Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4) facility at the NEIDL. The individual will be co-mentored by Profs. Bourouiba and Mühlberger and be part of an integrated collaborative interdisciplinary team of virologists, biologists and physical and engineering scientists in their two labs and collaborating labs of Profs. Heldt and Gray at the Institute of Medical Engineering and Sciences of MIT. Specialized training in BSL-4 cell culture infection studies and fluid- and bio-physics concepts will also be provided by the collaborating laboratories.

A PhD in virology, microbiology, biomedical engineering, or other engineering or physical science disciplines is required. Experience in biophysics and modeling, microfabrication and microfluidics is strongly desired. The candidate should have experience in molecular biology and BSL-2 virology with a focus on RNA viruses.

The work to be performed includes SARS-CoV-2 and Nipah virus cell culture infection studies, microscopy and spectroscopy analyses, designing and prototyping devices at various scales using additive/subtractive/molding techniques, functionally testing devices for use in the virological studies, and quantitative analyses of the obtained results, with interfacing with the modelling team members.

Further requirements include the ability to work independently and as part of a team in a multidisciplinary setting, the desire to meet and exceed expectations, a proven commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work, the ability to independently manage time, write, and prioritize deadlines. POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN DIGITAL PHENOTYPING OF PSYCHOLOGICAL STATES (MGH)

The Depression Clinical Research Program (DCRP) at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School is seeking a creative and computationally skilled postdoctoral fellow to develop next generation digital phenotyping methods that dynamically map psychological states such as depression, stress and perceived happiness, and cognitive function.  The fellow will work at the intersection of basic and translational digital phenotyping methods that seek to identify states of health and illness in older adults and how mind/body and mindfulness therapies may modify behavioral phenotypes. 

The successful candidate will have outstanding programming skills and a doctoral degree in psychology, neuroscience, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, computer science, applied math, or related field. Prior research experience in digital phenotyping is not required. Candidates with a strong background in machine learning, Python, and R statistical computing are encouraged to apply. Creativity, initiative, proven ability to publish, teamwork, self-direction, and excellent oral and written communication skills are key.

The fellow will have the opportunity to benefit from ongoing NIH funded clinical trials of behavioral interventions that, in addition to validated clinical measurements, receive multiple digital data streams.  These include passive and active smartphone sensing through the high throughput Beiwe platform developed by Dr. Jukka-Pekka Onnela’s laboratory at the Harvard School of Public Health, which is a collaborating group on this research.  Other data streams will include custom designed App software delivering psychotherapy and monitoring usage, and wearable devices.  The fellow will receive mentorship from the PI and other DCRP investigators toward the goal of publication of first-authored manuscripts early in the fellowship.  It is expected that this will enable the fellow to apply for independent NIH funding during the fellowship, building on the Principal Investigator’s and DCRP’s successful track record.

The position is full-time for 2 years (with funding extensible for an additional 2 years based on productivity and interest) with benefits.     Mentoring is a central part of Gladstone’s mission and essential to our culture. You’ll receive personalized mentorship and will be able to develop your own skills as a mentor. In addition to Gladstone’s mentoring programs, participants in the Embark program will be able to join monthly social, professional, and career development activities with the UCSF IRACDA (Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Award program. All postdocs also have access to personalized career advising sessions with Gladstone’s Postdoc Office.

    You can also grow your skills as a mentor by signing up to be a PUMAS mentor. Gladstone’s PUMAS (Promoting Underrepresented Minorities Advancing in the Sciences) summer internship program aims to provide historically underrepresented community college students with lab experience before they transfer to a 4-year institution to pursue a bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. As an Embark participant, you can sign up to mentor a PUMAS intern in your lab over the summer and expand your skills as a scientific and professional mentor.
  • Salary and Benefits
    Participants will receive a postdoctoral salary based on years of experience, Gladstone’s full benefits package, and a stipend of $10,000 per year for the period of the program.

TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES AT THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH (NIH)

The National Institutes of Health’s Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education offers an extensive range of clinical research training opportunities to prepare the next generation of clinician-scientists. Brief descriptions of the programs are provided below. As world’s largest biomedical research agency, the NIH encourages future clinician-scientists and medical researchers to consider adding an NIH experience to their portfolio.

Graduate Medical Education
NIH currently sponsor 17 medical specialty or subspecialty programs which have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). We also jointly sponsor clinical training programs with extramural training partners, to include Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland, and the National Capital Consortium. The OGE sponsors MIT's iGrad financial literacy portal, with resources to help with financial support.

The iGrad Financial Literacy platform (offered for free to the entire MIT community in collaboration with the MIT Federal Credit Union) is customized for MIT with videos, articles, games,  job board, searchable scholarship database, and interactive modules on a wide range of topics, including emergency-funding, credit card management, identity protection, spending smarts, etc. it is a great financial literacy tool for students and the MIT community in general.
