A discussion seminar with Daniel Huttenlocher and Eric Schmidt
Daniel Huttenlocher, the Dean of the MIT College of Computing, and Eric Schmidt, Co-founder of Schmidt Futures and former CEO and Chairman of Google/Alphabet, will be holding discussion seminars with small groups of undergraduate and graduate students on the afternoon of Tuesday, January 25th.
These seminars (as well as a “fireside chat” the previous afternoon) aim to explore in more depth how the on-going development and adoption of AI not only has impacted our society but even how we experience reality.

We will be offering the 11th year of 15.367/HST.978 Healthcare Ventures starting February 1, 2022 on Tues 3-4pm and Thurs 4-6pm. This graduate course requires no prerequisites and is structured as an active learning lab to develop and test new VC-backable ventures to improve healthcare with new technologies and models of care.
This 2nd “COVID edition” of Healthcare Ventures marks a decade of innovation and start-ups with $250m+ capital raised and a $1bn+ in exits from class alumni. Given we’re mostly virtual this year, the class has been expanded to include more teams and ‘problems’ to tackle along themes of Web3/Crypto/FinTech, Telemedicine, Algorithmic care, connected medical devices, new biometrics, artificial intelligence applications, mental health, women’s health, and more hot areas of innovation across healthcare.
WHY: This course is loaded with entrepreneurial classmates and speakers actively innovating worldwide across healthcare amid the tectonic shifts and digital transformation of medical care. We have found over the years that our class is an antidote to the epidemic of burnout afflicting healthcare professionals, and we intend for the class to unleash new energies from these experienced clinicians who want to be a part of the future of medical innovation.
WHO: The class usually consists of 50+ physicians, nurses, PhDs, MBAs, MPHs and executives from healthcare institutions working in teams, guided by the 6 faculty and many mentors and class alumni. Outside speakers this year include CEOs of leading healthcare companies, venture capital investors at some of the largest funds, founders of digital health companies and alumni of the class who return to share their adventures.
WHEN: Tuesdays 3-4pm ET and Thursdays 4-6pm ET via Zoom and Slack with some in person classes TBD on campus at MIT’s new InnovationHQ.
HOW: Classes and teamwork will take place on Zoom/Slack, allowing working healthcare professionals and executives to easily attend class and actively contribute to teams. We plan to hold a few in-person classes on MIT campus if COVID precautions allow. Students registered through MIT, HMS or cross registered with their university get 12 credits and we also allow a limited number of outsiders to take the class without cost or formal registration. Teams will form around problems and dive into user segments, business models, minimum viable products and develop business plans and pitches to leading VCs and healthcare executives.

We are excited to share two new resources to help graduate students care for and prioritize their wellbeing.
In partnership with the Health Promotion Working Group and with the input from faculty, staff, and students, we have launched DoingWell at MIT. The DoingWell website centralizes many of the resources that are available to help students to navigate their own wellbeing journey, including information on how to get support and services to help them practice healthy habits.
We have also launched a new course, Mental Health and Wellbeing for Graduate Students, in the Atlas Learning Center to help graduate students understand common challenges of the graduate student experience and how to navigate support and resources to prioritize their wellbeing. This course, which is also valuable to any faculty and staff who work with graduate students, was developed in partnership with the Division of Student Life, Office of the Vice Chancellor, and MIT Medical.
This is just the beginning of our efforts to promote a culture of student wellbeing at MIT. We are excited to hear your feedback on these resources. The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 continues to pose a significant global health threat. Along with vaccines and targeted therapeutics, there is a critical need for rapid diagnostic solutions. In this work, we employ a deep learning-based protein design to engineer molecular beacons that function as conformational switches for high sensitivity detection of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein receptor-binding domain (S-RBD). The beacons contain two peptides, together forming a heterodimer, and a binding ligand between them to detect the presence of S-RBD.
In the absence of S-RBD (OFF), the peptide beacons adopt a closed conformation that opens when bound to the S-RBD and produces a fluorescence signal (ON), utilizing a fluorophore-quencher pair at the two ends of the heterodimer stems. We integrated these beacons on a planar waveguide-based fluorescence sensor to construct a point-of-care diagnostic platform for SARS-CoV-2. The device can detect the S-RBD with limits of detection (LoD) in the sub-femtomolar range. We envision that the platform will be a rapid at-home diagnostic device in the future.

Master and PhD students:
We, the Skeletal Oncology Research Group, SORG (https://sorg.mgh.harvard.edu/), and the Center for Physical Artificial Intelligence, CPAI, are looking for multiple interested students to join our team. The mission of SORG and CPAI is to improve patient experience through clinical and engineering research in orthopaedic. This position would provide an excellent opportunity for a multidisciplinary research by collaborating with a diverse group of teammates, industrial and academic partners, writing journal articles and grants, understanding the clinical challenges in orthopaedic surgery, gain hands-on experience in the design and development of novel machine learning models, and creating a long-term network of collaborators.
There are multiple positions available in different areas:
- Development of AI-based decision support diagnosis, prediction and treatment suggestion systems for orthopaedic patients. This project is part of the greater effort of creating AI based registries at the Mass General Brigham hospitals. The students will have a chance to collaborate with almost all of the orthopaedic service chiefs at MGH and BWH to address significant clinical questions.
- Development of biomedical devices and wearables for prevention of Fall. Fall injury with annual $50 Billion cost is one of the most crucial problems in healthcare system. We have been developing a novel optical pressure mapping device to assess and quantify balance in patients. Our work has been the recipient of several awards including top three best poster award at the Science annual meeting.
- Development of wearables for monitoring muscle and tendon activity for pre, intra, and post operation monitoring of orthopaedic patients. Quantifying muscle activity is crucial to assess patient progress and prevent reinjury specially in athletes. In part of this project, we focus on developing wearables to prevent reinjury following hamstring injury in football players.

The 2022 Essay Contest will open on the 9th of February 2022.
About the Contest
The Lasker Foundation Essay Contest engages young scientists and clinicians from the US and around the globe in a discussion about big questions in biology and medicine and the role of biomedical research in our society today. The Contest aims to build skills in communicating important medical and scientific issues to broad audiences. The topic is announced annually in early February and winners are announced in early July.
The Contest is open to medical school students, interns, residents, and fellows; doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows in biomedical sciences; and graduate students in public health or other health professions programs. Applicants (from the US or any other countries) must be currently participating in an educational program. This program may be located in any country.
Winners will receive up to $5,000. Monetary prizes will be directed to the winner’s university to be used towards the winner’s educational expenses.
Essays should be of 800 words or less and must be written in English. The file containing the essay should include the essay title and the applicant’s name, email, and institutional affiliation. References are not counted towards the 800 word limit. Field-specific scientific jargon should be avoided or explained.
Essays will be evaluated based on their quality of writing, style, and clarity. Essays that are not written in English or are longer than 800 words will not be considered.

Ashdown House will be hosting a grad-student-wide team for Mystery Hunt 2022, happening January 14, 2022 — January 17, 2022. This Mystery Hunt will be held remotely, so people can puzzle from anywhere in the world. For the grad student team hosted by Ashdown House, we will be (tentatively) having in-person puzzling in Ashdown House with snacks, as well as supporting remote puzzling through Discord and a collaboration server. We are currently looking for students interested in participating in computational and experimental work to better understand cancer resistance. Some of the central questions in our research program (based at Dana-Farber and the Broad) include:
- What genomic and clinical features predict response and resistance to immunotherapy in advanced cancers (e.g., lung, bladder)?
- Can we design novel in vitro systems to evolve and profile resistance to cancer therapies at massive scale (e.g., 30-50 resistant clones/experiment)?
- How do cancer dependencies (from whole genome CRISPR profiling) change during the evolution of resistance?

We are launching Come On Out - Japan’s 7th Annual Global English Camp Summer Internship Program and extending our invitation to top Universities and Japanese high school students for a cross-cultural learning experience.
We are currently seeking university students and recent graduates with native level English skills who are passionate about Japanese culture, gaining global experience, and mentoring others. They will be offered the opportunity to come to Japan for five weeks from mid-July to late August, 2022. Although this is an unpaid internship, the sponsor is providing certain expenses for each intern who participates in the six-week program. Airfare, lodging, meals, and transportation subsidies will be provided. The program also offers optional Japanese language classes, Japanese cultural workshops, field trips and an overnight excursion. These additional opportunities are all designed to add cultural enrichment to your summer abroad experience. In the event that travel to Japan is not possible due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will hold the event virtually and interns will be compensated monetarily (as we did in 2020).
This program is different from any other traditional teaching position in Japan. Interns will facilitate English conversations with Japanese high school students on a variety of relevant global topics ranging from discussing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to their personal life missions. Interns will be able to extend mentorship to new students each week as well as form lifelong connections with their fellow interns inside and outside the classroom.
We do not have any Japanese fluency requirements. Come On Out - Japan accepts undergraduates, graduates and recently graduated students as well.

NSF CAREER grant to study the experiences of current engineering graduate students over time in an effort to understand graduate student attrition and persistence in engineering.
We are collecting longitudinal data using text-message survey methods, following participants over time.
This research is conducted via very short surveys conducted via text message on your cell phone. If you agree, and we select you for this study based on your screening criteria, you will receive very short surveys on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Monday and Wednesday surveys will take approximately 30 seconds. Weekly, monthly, and end-of-term (December, May, August) surveys on Fridays will take 1 to 3 minutes.

We invite you to participate in the 2020 HST Microbiome Study, under the direction of the MIT Center for Microbiome Informatics and Therapeutics (CMIT)! Our research study aims to assess the effects of clothing breathability on yeast-bacterial interactions in the vaginal microbiome. We are recruiting healthy women between 18 and 50 years of age with regular menstruation cycles. We encourage everyone to apply, as we hope to have a diverse pool of study participants!
The study will be conducted over a two month period. During each month, participants will wear underwear (provided!) and lower-body clothing of either high or low breathability for seven days. Participants will come to building E25 to collect their own vaginal swab samples on days 0, 3, and 7 for each of the two months.
Participants will be provided the necessary undergarments, which they can keep after the study!

Flipping Failure is a collection of video stories told by MIT students about their path towards resilience when faced with challenge at MIT.
The goal of this community initiative is to provide visibility to stories of academic challenge and resilience so that we can begin shifting the conversation around struggle from something to be ashamed of to something that is human. Struggling is not only part of the human experience, but it is often the result of tackling difficult challenges and learning experiences. We hope that watching peers talk about their challenges and hearing about the productive and healthy strategies they used to cope will help other students discover their own path towards resilience and self-acceptance.

The Garris Lab in the Center for Systems Biology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School is looking for curious and driven postdoctoral research fellows who want to investigate the biology of dendritic cells in cancer growth and response to therapy. Ideal candidates should have a background in immunology research or cancer biology, with expertise in cell culture, flow cytometry, and in vivo mouse models.
Postdoctoral fellows will design and execute laboratory research in support of the lab’s mission to investigate immune mechanisms of tumor rejection. Creative thinkers who are willing to take risks and define important unmet problems in cancer research are encouraged to apply. Candidates will receive a high degree of hands on mentoring, and will be encouraged to apply for their own grants with the eventual goal of the fellow launching their independent research career.

Hundreds of millions of human genomes and exomes are expected to be sequenced over the next decade, driven by steady innovations in sequencing technologies pioneered by Illumina. The enormous quantities of genomic data being generated by Illumina in collaboration with our partners worldwide represents a major opportunity to develop novel data-driven approaches to extract clinically actionable information from the genome, and apply it towards improving human health.
To accelerate the adoption of clinical sequencing, Illumina is recruiting an exceptional computational scientist with a strong quantitative background in human genetics and genomics to work on the development of novel algorithms for genome interpretation. Key objectives would include classification of benign vs pathogenic variants by utilizing whole genomes and functional genomic data, discovery of novel gene-disease relationships, and characterizing selective constraint.
A key objective is to publish research results in peer-reviewed journals in order to improve the accuracy, throughput, and reproducibility of genome interpretation, thereby removing barriers to clinical adoption of whole genome sequencing. In addition to strong analytical skills, this position will require a high degree of initiative, autonomy, and scientific collaboration.
- Develop novel statistical algorithms for classifying variants of unknown significance by integrating information from detailed clinical phenotypes, functional genomics, selective constraint, and protein structure.
- Be the primary contributor for scientific collaborations with Illumina’s academic, nonprofit, and industry partners, and lead a multidisciplinary team focused on achieving these aims.

Establish your independent research program in computational health at Harvard and Boston Children’s Hospital. CHIP, the Computational Health Informatics Program at Boston Children’s Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School and a collaborating program of its Department of Biomedical Informatics, is recruiting research faculty at junior and senior levels to join us in transforming care delivery and biomedical science.
We seek outstanding candidates passionate about advancing the ability to acquire and then reason over an entire spectrum of data types ranging from clinical, epidemiological, environmental, and social, all the way down to molecular and genomic. Candidates who are expert in health IT architectures and standards (e.g., SMART on FHIR apps and infrastructure) will be given special consideration, as will faculty focused on transforming the point of care.
Areas of focus can include machine learning/AI including clinical decision support and predictive medicine, precision medicine, population health, real-world evidence and data visualization.
Candidates at the Instructor or Assistant Professor level should have strong quantitative backgrounds and a history of innovative approaches to biomedical scientific inquiry or the translation of computational methods to engineering or software applications in medicine. We invite applicants for a postdoctoral fellow position in the Department of Engineering at Boston College. The department is responsible for the new undergraduate human-centered engineering program which welcomed its first cohort of students in Fall 2021. The program integrates Boston College's core liberal arts curriculum with experiential engineering curriculum that emphasizes societal responsibility.
The postdoctoral fellow will be working with Prof. Bryan Ranger and his collaborators (including faculty in the Computer Science Department and Global Public Health Program at Boston College) on projects involving machine learning (ML) for medical image and biomedical signal analysis. Background and expertise in developing original methods for recognition in images or videos is essential. Candidates with experience in mobile hardware and software development platforms for computer vision applications are particularly well-suited for this position. Collaborative opportunities to apply ML techniques to other types of data, such as clinical biomarkers and social determinants of health, may also be available if there is interest.
Prof. Ranger’s research group will have a particular focus on developing technologies that will address challenges in settings with limited resources. Though not required for the position, experience with human-centered design and a demonstrated interest in global health is a plus. While the fellow will spend most of their time conducting research and working on manuscripts, there may be opportunities for teaching, mentoring and grant writing.

The Genome Technologies and Computational Sciences (GTCS) group at Biogen is seeking a machine learning research scientist to join in the mission of designing study and applying machine learning and deep learning techniques to omics and biomedical data. The successful candidate will work closely with computational biology experts, IT, geneticists, biologists to design and analyze various Omics studies and biomedical images (fundus images for example) from large registry data (such as UK Biobank). The scientist in this role will build and maintain integrative analysis workflows, cross-indication databases and web-based visualization tool; maintain biological knowledge base, keep the analytical results up-to-date with update of analytical tools, data bases and data sources; apply AI/ML techniques, mainly image-based applications for biomedical problems (single cell transcriptomics, spatial transcriptomics, viral variant calling, fundus images etc.); NGS support in Gene Therapy Accelerator Unit (GTxAU).
We are looking for a highly motivated individual as a postdoctoral researcher on a collaborative project at the interface of Fluids and Health driven by the Fluid Dynamics of Disease Transmission Laboratory at MIT, Cambridge, MA and the Mühlberger Laboratory at the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL) at Boston University, Boston, MA. The Fluid Dynamics of Disease Transmission Laboratory at MIT, directed by Prof. Bourouiba, has a strong research focus on fluid dynamics and modeling of infectious disease transmission and medical applications at various scales. Dr. Mühlberger’s laboratory at the NEIDL has a strong research focus on viral replication strategies and pathogenesis mechanism of highly pathogenic viruses, including filoviruses, henipaviruses, and more recently, SARS-CoV-2.
The project will focus on the study of currently poorly understood mechanisms of respiratory virus transmission through the lens of fluid- and bio-physics and will be part of an interdisciplinary effort to tackle important knowledge gaps in our understanding of the various phases of host-to-host transmission that are the root of pandemics for a range of viral diseases. Viruses of interest include SARS-CoV-2 and Nipah virus among others. Following applicable background checks and training, this position will require work in the Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4) facility at the NEIDL. The individual will be co-mentored by Profs. Bourouiba and Mühlberger and be part of an integrated collaborative interdisciplinary team of virologists, biologists and physical and engineering scientists in their two labs and collaborating labs of Profs. Heldt and Gray at the Institute of Medical Engineering and Sciences of MIT. Specialized training in BSL-4 cell culture infection studies and fluid- and bio-physics concepts will also be provided by the collaborating laboratories.
A PhD in virology, microbiology, biomedical engineering, or other engineering or physical science disciplines is required. Experience in biophysics and modeling, microfabrication and microfluidics is strongly desired. The candidate should have experience in molecular biology and BSL-2 virology with a focus on RNA viruses.
The work to be performed includes SARS-CoV-2 and Nipah virus cell culture infection studies, microscopy and spectroscopy analyses, designing and prototyping devices at various scales using additive/subtractive/molding techniques, functionally testing devices for use in the virological studies, and quantitative analyses of the obtained results, with interfacing with the modelling team members.

The Depression Clinical Research Program (DCRP) at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School is seeking a creative and computationally skilled postdoctoral fellow to develop next generation digital phenotyping methods that dynamically map psychological states such as depression, stress and perceived happiness, and cognitive function. The fellow will work at the intersection of basic and translational digital phenotyping methods that seek to identify states of health and illness in older adults and how mind/body and mindfulness therapies may modify behavioral phenotypes.
The successful candidate will have outstanding programming skills and a doctoral degree in psychology, neuroscience, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, computer science, applied math, or related field. Prior research experience in digital phenotyping is not required. Candidates with a strong background in machine learning, Python, and R statistical computing are encouraged to apply. Creativity, initiative, proven ability to publish, teamwork, self-direction, and excellent oral and written communication skills are key.
The fellow will have the opportunity to benefit from ongoing NIH funded clinical trials of behavioral interventions that, in addition to validated clinical measurements, receive multiple digital data streams. These include passive and active smartphone sensing through the high throughput Beiwe platform developed by Dr. Jukka-Pekka Onnela’s laboratory at the Harvard School of Public Health, which is a collaborating group on this research. Other data streams will include custom designed App software delivering psychotherapy and monitoring usage, and wearable devices. The fellow will receive mentorship from the PI and other DCRP investigators toward the goal of publication of first-authored manuscripts early in the fellowship. It is expected that this will enable the fellow to apply for independent NIH funding during the fellowship, building on the Principal Investigator’s and DCRP’s successful track record.
The position is full-time for 2 years (with funding extensible for an additional 2 years based on productivity and interest) with benefits. Gladstone’s postdoctoral program is built to prepare you for a transition into an independent career, providing training in technical, professional, and leadership skills. Through courses offered at Gladstone, you’ll be able to expand your skills in data science, leadership and management, scientific and grant writing, and communication, in addition to receiving individual career counseling and guidance. Gladstone is home to many community groups that provide opportunities for leadership, collaboration, mentorship, and science education outreach to the local community.
The Gladstone Postdoc Advisory Committee (GPAC) aims to provide support that maximizes the professional and scientific development of postdocs at Gladstone.
Outside of the postdoc committee, Gladstone has a number of community groups that connect individuals across labs and teams. Examples include the LGBTQ+ community group, the Women’s Initiative, and Elevated Voices, our community group dedicated to creating an inclusive culture in which people of color are empowered to contribute, learn, and lead.
Mentoring is a central part of Gladstone’s mission and essential to our culture. You’ll receive personalized mentorship and will be able to develop your own skills as a mentor. In addition to Gladstone’s mentoring programs, participants in the Embark program will be able to join monthly social, professional, and career development activities with the UCSF IRACDA (Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Award program. All postdocs also have access to personalized career advising sessions with Gladstone’s Postdoc Office.
You can also grow your skills as a mentor by signing up to be a PUMAS mentor. Gladstone’s PUMAS (Promoting Underrepresented Minorities Advancing in the Sciences) summer internship program aims to provide historically underrepresented community college students with lab experience before they transfer to a 4-year institution to pursue a bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. As an Embark participant, you can sign up to mentor a PUMAS intern in your lab over the summer and expand your skills as a scientific and professional mentor.
- Salary and Benefits
Participants will receive a postdoctoral salary based on years of experience, Gladstone’s full benefits package, and a stipend of $10,000 per year for the period of the program.

The National Institutes of Health’s Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education offers an extensive range of clinical research training opportunities to prepare the next generation of clinician-scientists. Graduate Medical Education
