HST is proud to announce that faculty member Elliot Chaikof has won the 2019 Flance-Karl Award, accorded annually by the American Surgical Association. The award is given to one surgeon in the U.S. who has made a significant impact in translational research, having had applications to clinical surgery across specialties.
As Johnson and Johnson Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, and Chairman of the Roberta and Stephen R. Weiner Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Chaikof in the course of his career has worked to advance the development of engineered living tissues, implantable devices, artificial organs, and cell-based therapies.
His recent endeavors have focused on drug discovery, among teams of medicinal and computational chemists, to develop more effective treatments for atherosclerosis, venous thrombosis, metabolic syndrome, and inflammatory bowel disease.
“It is a great honor to be recognized among the extraordinary group of surgeons who have received this award in previous years,” said Chaikof, who accepted the honor at the 139th American Surgical Association annual meeting in Dallas, Texas. "It has been particularly rewarding to have been able to collaborate over many years with so many outstanding faculty and trainees."
