HST and IMES Faculty Member Ellen Roche has been appointed W.M. Keck Career Development Professor in Biomedical Engineering at MIT. Currently, an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering and at IMES, as well as the Hermann L.F. von Helmholtz Career Development Professor, Roche, originally from Galway, Ireland, has merged medicine and engineering throughout her career in industry and academia.

Professor Roche’s Therapeutic Technology Design & Development lab utilizes the combined advances of engineering, including 3D printing and soft robotics, and computational analysis to design assistive devices for tissue repair, in collaboration with medical experts throughout Boston and Cambridge. Roche and her research group have recently moved beyond a focus on cardiac function toward treatments of respiratory illness and diabetes.

“It’s a great honor to be named the W.M. Keck Career Development Professor,” Roche stated. “I’m truly grateful to be working with talented people in my group and in the local community to advance medical device technology that enhances patient care.”

The new chair will take effect on July 1.
