Erin Rousseau, a second-year HST MEMP Ph.D. student, has penned a response to the House of Representatives ruling on the tax bill that proposes to tax tuition waivers. This change would tack on potentially $10K+ of taxes to graduate students at MIT, exponentially increasing their tax burden. The greater implication of these changes is the decrease in graduate student education across the nation. According to Erin, these increased costs "would decimate American competitiveness" and "shut out the next generation of innovators from universities."
