Joseph "Jay" Walsh, HST grad, is named to University of Illinois leadership position.

Joseph Walsh is named to interim position as Vice President for Economic Development and Innovation at the University of Illinois

Joseph “Jay” Walsh, a graduate of HST’s Medical Engineering and Medical Physics (MEMP) PhD program, has been named interim Vice President for Economic Development and Innovation at the University of Illinois System.

Walsh, a biomedical engineering scholar, has done important work on laser-tissue interactions that have laid the foundation for many current standard laser-based procedures in medicine and surgery. His research has led to eight patents and he is widely published. He assumed his new role on May 16. Prior to taking on this new role, Walsh served as the vice-president for research at Northwestern University from 2007 until 2019. He most recently was the senior advisor to the president for research and science, starting his career at Northwestern in 1988 as a professor of biomedical engineering at the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
