Indiana University has appointed Michael A. Weiss, MD, Ph.D., MBA as a distinguished professor, the university's highest academic rank for scholars and researchers. Dr. Weiss is also the Chair of the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at Indiana University's School of Medicine and the director of chemical biology and biotherapeutics for the Indiana University Precision Health Initiative.
Dr. Weiss is a graduate of the HST MD program and the Harvard Biophysics Ph.D. program. His work in molecular biomedical research focuses on insulin signaling and its relation to diabetes mellitus and sex determination and its relation to genetic infertility syndromes. Research in his lab has led to understanding a newly recognized syndrome of diabetes and, in the area of sex determination, to the understanding of structure and dynamics of many critical proteins.
He is the recipient of the Maurice Saltzman Award from the Mt. Sinai Health Care Foundation of Cleveland and the Fletcher Scholars Award in Cancer Research from the Cancer Research Foundation. He was named to the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars by President Jimmy Carter in 1978. He is a member of the Association of American Physicians, the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases Board of Scientific Counselors.
